Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is situated 350 kilometers North of Nairobi in Samburu County. It is one of the two areas in which conservationists George & Joy Adamson raised Elsa: The Lioness made famous in the bestselling book and award-winning movie Born Free. The reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves. In the middle of the reserve, the Ewaso Ng’iro flows through Dou palm groves and thick riverine forests which provides water to the game in this arid region. During the trip, we shall explore the reserves inspiring landscape where we expect to see some of the big five, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra, Besia Oryx, and much more. Birdlife is prolific with over 450 species of birds recorded.
Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha is famous for its high populations of hippos and flamingos. There are over 1,500 hippos in the area, and you are almost guaranteed to see one. The lake is a birder’s paradise as it is home to over 400 bird species. Lesser and greater flamingos flock to the lake, forming a wash of bright pink across the lake's surface. Giraffes, zebras, impalas, and waterbucks can be sighted in the immediate vicinity of Lake Naivasha, around Crescent Island, Crater Lake Game Sanctuary, and Longonot National Park. Lucky adventurers may even glimpse a leopard.
Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara features a stunning kaleidoscope of wild and rugged landscapes, warm and welcoming people and an exciting array of creatures – big and small. World famous for hosting the epic Great Migration, the Masai Mara welcomes 1.5 million wildebeests onto its sprawling savannahs each July through October. Day 1: Nairobi to Olpejeta
Pick up from the airport or your preferred hotel and depart Nairobi heading north, driving through lush coffee and tea estates. Arriving at Serena Sweetwaters in time for lunch. Check in and enjoy a warm meal as you relax awaiting your first game drive inside the conservancy. In the afternoon, set out on a game drive in this conservancy which is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and also the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees. Later after an amazing drive, head back to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Olpejeta to Samburu
After an early breakfast, head out for a morning game drive in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Discover more of the conservancy’s rich biodiversity, from lions and elephants to the endangered black rhino. Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya where these primates can be seen. Depart for Samburu National Reserve, a journey that takes you north across the equator and into the arid landscapes of Samburu. Upon arrival, check into Samburu Simba Lodge for lunch and unwind. Later in the afternoon, enjoy a game drive before heading back to the lodge to enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Full Day Samburu
Spend the entire day exploring the unique landscapes and wildlife of Samburu National Reserve. Renowned for its rare and endemic species such as the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Somali ostrich, Samburu offers a distinctive safari experience. Embark on morning and afternoon game drives, taking in the striking scenery of open savannahs, rugged hills, and the Ewaso Nyiro River, which attracts a variety of wildlife. Between game drives, relax at your lodge and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. All meals and an overnight stay will be at Samburu Simba Lodge.
Day 4: Samburu to Lake Naivasha
After breakfast, depart with game drive en-route Lake Naivasha. Drive past the northern tip of the Aberdares mountains to descend into the Great Rift Valley where Lake Naivasha is located, via the Thompson Falls. After sightseeing, drive to The Great Rift Valley Lodge for check in and lunch. Later in the afternoon, visit the lake and enjoy a boat ride and a guided safari walk in Crescent Island. Afterwards, drive back to The Great Rift Valley Lodge where you will enjoy your dinner and spend the night.
Day 5: Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara
On this day, depart Lake Naivasha and drive to Masai Mara National Reserve. Upon arrival, check in at Ashnil Mara and have lunch. Afterwards, have a rest before embarking on your first game drive in the Masai Mara. The reserve is renowned for its abundant wildlife, including the Big Five, wildebeest migration, and its vast savannah landscapes. In the evening, return to your accommodation for dinner and unwind around a campfire, sharing stories of the day's adventures.
Day 6: Masai Mara Full Day
Have breakfast by 7 am and leave for a full-day game drive with a packed lunch. You will have comprehensive game drives to view the wildlife and a visit to the Mara River, famous for the wildebeest migration. Have lunch by the river and proceed with the game drive until 4 pm. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Masai Mara back to Nairobi
Early morning after breakfast, check out of the lodge and depart to Nairobi. Make a quick stop along the way for lunch and continue with your drive. Arriving late in the afternoon, drop off at the airport or a hotel of your choice.
