Overview

Your adventure begins in Samburu National Reserve, where rugged semi-arid landscapes along the Ewaso Nyiro River host the rare Samburu Special Five—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the long-necked gerenuk. With two nights here, you enjoy unhurried game drives, often spotting elephants cooling off by the river and predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs patrolling the plains. After immersing yourself in Samburu’s distinctive wilderness, you travel south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for a night at Sweetwaters. This world-class conservancy offers excellent chances to see both black and southern white rhinos, chimpanzees at the only sanctuary of their kind in Kenya, and diverse wildlife thriving on its well-protected plains. Sweetwaters Serena Camp’s waterhole-facing tents provide front-row views of animals as they gather to drink, adding comfort and serenity to your final night before the journey back to Nairobi.

Tour Schedule

Day 1: Nairobi → Samburu National Reserve
Leave Nairobi in the morning and drive north past Mount Kenya and the rolling farmlands of central Kenya, arriving in Samburu in time for lunch. After settling into your lodge or camp, enjoy a late-afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River, where elephants, lions, leopards, and the unique Samburu Special Five—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk—are frequently seen. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full Day in Samburu
Spend the day exploring Samburu with morning and afternoon game drives. The reserve’s dramatic semi-arid landscapes and riverine forests offer excellent wildlife viewing, especially around the riverbanks where animals gather to drink. Between drives, relax at the lodge and enjoy the serene views of the rugged northern wilderness. Optional cultural visits to a Samburu village can also be arranged. Dinner and overnight at your Samburu lodge.

Day 3: Samburu → Ol Pejeta Conservancy (Sweetwaters)
After breakfast, depart Samburu and drive south toward Nanyuki, arriving at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in time for lunch. Check in at Sweetwaters Serena Camp, known for its waterhole views. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive in the conservancy, famous for its high concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five, large rhino populations, and the chimpanzee sanctuary—the only one in Kenya. Return to camp for dinner and relax as animals visit the floodlit waterhole throughout the evening. Overnight at Sweetwaters.

Day 4: Ol Pejeta → Nairobi
Start the day with a final early-morning game drive in the conservancy, then return for breakfast. After check-out, begin the drive back to Nairobi, arriving around midday or early afternoon, marking the end of your 4-day, 3-night safari.
