Initially established as a game reserve in 1951, it was upgraded to a national park in 2006, encompassing an area of approximately 3,245 square kilometers. Mkomazi is home to a variety of wildlife typical of arid regions, including species like giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland, impala, and Grant's gazelle.
